What is an ABPM?
Unlike traditional blood pressure measurements taken in a clinical setting, ABPM offers unique advantages. It minimises the risk of white-coat syndrome, a phenomenon where patients exhibit elevated blood pressure readings due to anxiety during a doctor's visit. Additionally, ABPM allows for a clear understanding of blood pressure changes during activities, sleep, and at specific times of the day. This data is invaluable for personalised treatment plans that suit your specific lifestyle and health needs.
Preparing for Your ABPM
Preparing for your ABPM test is straightforward. It's recommended to wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid heavy exercise on the day of the test. Our staff will provide you with a blood pressure cuff that you will wear for 24 hours. You should also maintain your usual routine. This includes your regular meals, medications, and activities. However, please inform our team if you're taking any medications that may affect your blood pressure.
During Your ABPM Test
During the ABPM test, you’ll have a small, portable monitor attached to the cuff on your arm. This device will automatically inflate the cuff at set intervals throughout the day and night, recording your blood pressure. You can carry on with your daily activities, but it’s important to avoid very physical exercise or bathing while wearing the device. Once the monitoring period is complete, you'll return the device to the clinic, and our team will analyse the data.

Post-Test Guidelines
After the test, you can resume your normal activities immediately. Your blood pressure data is safely recorded and reviewed by our experienced clinicians. There are typically no side effects to worry about following the test. You may discuss any immediate questions you have with our staff.
Your ABPM Report
Following the test, your results will be interpreted by one of our clinicians. A comprehensive report will be prepared, summarising the findings of the ABPM. You will receive this report along with your referring clinician, who will explain the results and discuss any recommended actions or further tests, if necessary.
