24hr Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM)
Accurate blood pressure monitoring over 24 hours during normal daily activities.

24hr Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM)
We provide private 24 hour blood pressure monitoring using modern ambulatory blood pressure monitoring devices designed for comfortable everyday wear. ABPM monitoring provides a more accurate assessment of blood pressure patterns throughout the day and night compared to a single clinic reading.

What is an ABPM?
Unlike traditional blood pressure measurements taken in a clinical setting, ABPM offers unique advantages. It minimises the risk of white-coat syndrome, a phenomenon where patients exhibit elevated blood pressure readings due to anxiety during a doctor's visit. Additionally, ABPM allows for a clear understanding of blood pressure changes during activities, sleep, and at specific times of the day. This data is invaluable for personalised treatment plans that suit your specific lifestyle and health needs.
Who is this test for?
An ABPM may be beneficial for you if you suffer from:
- Suspected high blood pressure
- Monitoring treatment effectiveness
- White coat hypertension
- Fluctuating blood pressure readings
- GP or specialist referral
During Your ABPM Test
During the ABPM test, you’ll have a small, portable monitor attached to the cuff on your arm. This device will automatically inflate the cuff at set intervals throughout the day and night, recording your blood pressure. You can carry on with your daily activities, but it’s important to avoid very physical exercise or bathing while wearing the device. Once the monitoring period is complete, you'll return the device to the clinic, and our team will analyse the data.
Post-Test Guidelines
After the test, you can resume your normal activities immediately. Your blood pressure data is safely recorded and reviewed by our experienced clinicians. There are typically no side effects to worry about following the test. You may discuss any immediate questions you have with our staff.
Your ABPM Report
Following the test, your results will be interpreted by one of our clinicians. A comprehensive report will be prepared, summarising the findings of the ABPM. You will receive this report along with your referring clinician, who will explain the results and discuss any recommended actions or further tests, if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How does 24-hour blood pressure monitoring work?
A small portable device is worn on your arm and automatically measures your blood pressure at regular intervals throughout the day and night.
Can I continue normal activities during the test?
Yes, you should continue your usual daily routine, although you may need to keep your arm still during measurements.
When will I receive my results?
Reports are typically delivered within 24 working hours after the monitor being returned.
Do I need a referral?
No, you can self-refer for this test. At The Heart Clinic, we will perform a 'suitability consultation' to ensure that you are getting the right test for your concerns.
Can I sleep while wearing the monitor?
Yes, the device is worn overnight to record your blood pressure during sleep, which is an important part of the assessment.
Is the test comfortable?
You may feel the cuff tighten when readings are taken, but this is brief and generally well tolerated.
Will the results be explained to me?
You will receive a clear, written report. If further review is required, this can be arranged with a clinician or consultant cardiologist.
